What Makes A Patio A Patio?

Sand & Gravel

Joint Sand

Gravel and sand are usually refered to by contractors as the “base”. The base is the backbone of your patio consisiting of 4-5 inches of gravel and 1 inch of sand. Both of these layers need to be heavily compacted with a tamper to avoid any settling overtime.  Most of my repairs focus on this base layer. Due to Minnesota’s harsh winters and freezing tempatures the base is almost guarenteed to settle or heave overtime.

There are two types of paver joint sand; mason sand and polysweep, Mason sand is the most commonly used and cheapest option, while polysweep is an alternative for homeowners that are concered with weed and pest control. paver joint sand is needed to control paver spacing and acts as the glue to hold the pattern tight. Both are swept out of the joints over time from runoff water, leafblowers, etc.

Edging

Pavers

Edging is used to kept the exposed edges of your patio in place. The industry standard is plastic strips installed using 12inch railroad spikes to secure it to the base. However, through my expierence i have found plastic edging to be less than resillent, due to the flexible nature of it. I have found steel to be a better alternative due to its ability to with stand the elements and security.

Not a patio without pavers.
